Government strategies, Local Authority plans and commissioning cycles are geared towards putting the service user at the heart of services received, giving independence, choice and control to those who use services rather than manage their delivery. As part of this agenda, the supported housing and personalisation landscape has seen a move away from residential care and into supported living.

Supported Living and Personalisation

Although the model has been around for some time, there is still no legal definition of what constitutes supported living. Many different opinions exist as to what the model should look like other than a form of tenancy or agreement to pay rent is involved. Good quality residential care should still give service users independence, choice and control. New rules on housing benefit and local housing allowance combined with Local Authority austerity measures have combined to make some supported living models unviable.
